| The product... Our timber is sawn at our own sawmill situated in the industrial area of Knysna on 50 000m of land. At the sawmill logs are sawn and dried to correct moisture levels before being moulded into various products such as DECKING and FENCING PICKETS. POLES are turned at the sawmill as well as in the field by our own employees ensuring optimum quality from beginning to end. |

| The past century... In October 1891 George Parkes, Chairman of A & F Parkes, edge tool manufacturers of Birmingham, visited Knysna while on a business trip in South Africa. He purchased both a forest and a steam operated saw mill, and registered the company Knysna Forest Co. in February 1892, which operated from the centre of the village of Knysna. George Parkes (Son of the founder of the firm) arrived in Knysna in 1892 to take charge of the company. In 1902 the name was changed to Geo. Parkes and Sons. The mill stood in centre of Knysna and was rebuilt by the brothers Stephen and Howard Parkes with its characteristic gables in 1919. This building is now the centre of the upmarket shopping mall, Woodmill Lane. With the commercial development of the town the saw mill had to be relocated to the Industrial Area in 1985. The original products were Stinkwood wheelbarrows, yokes, swingles, neck bars, wagon wood and handles. The present Managing Director, Howard James Parkes, is the 4th generation to serve the firm being grandson of Howard Parkes. |
